Learning more advanced strategy as a beginner
By Pokershopping.com July 2006

If you are a poker player, you want to be the best poker player you can be. You know the basics: a flush beats a straight; the first three community cards in hold'em are known as the flop, etc. Now you're ready to get into some advanced poker strategy. How do you do it? Where do you need to go to get to the next level of poker?

Advanced poker strategy is a little harder to come by than the basics; that's what makes it advanced. But poker knowledge can be gained and we are fortunate to live in a world so technologically advanced that that knowledge is practically at our fingertips.

One of the best ways to learn advanced poker strategy is by reading the literature. There are tons of poker books out on the market now so you have a wide variety to choose from. The two books which must form the heart of your poker book collection are Super/System by Doyle Brunson and The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky. Once you have mastered these two tomes you will already have a good line on advanced poker strategy and be ready to move forward.

Another great way to learn advanced poker strategy is by observation. Watch good players. See what they do, how and why they do it and how and why it works. Televised poker is actually not the best for this purpose. Televised poker tournaments cut out too many hands and only show final poker tables, where strategy can change dramatically. For the best results, observe online or live play. It's not as exciting as watching the World Poker Tour, but it can improve your game dramatically.

Finally, the only way you will know if your skills have improved is by putting your advanced poker strategy to the test. Play as often as you can within your means. The more you play, the more you will learn, and the more advanced your poker will become. Good luck.

Party Poker is one of the biggest poker rooms in the world and you will always be able to quickly find the game and limit of your choice. Don't waste your time on small poker rooms that have not achieved critical mass. Great interface, clean games and generous player points system. Sign up bonus for new accounts.

Pacific Poker is another one of the giant poker rooms where you don't have to wait for ages for your game of choice. One of the reasons I love playing at Pacific is that the games often seem to be of a relatively low standard. Some sites boast lots of famous players and pros, but if you just want to win money then Pacific is one of the best sites around. Good new account bonuses, nice interface, super fast dealing and clean games make this site one of the best.
