From the Horse's Mouth: Jezki McCoy's Best Chance at Cheltenham

From Michael Georgiou
March 2015.

The name of Tony McCoy is synonymous with success in the sport of horse racing, despite the fact that he is now approaching the end of his career. Appearing in what will be his final Cheltenham Festival in March, McCoy is facing considerable pressure to go out in style by winning a series of races at the prestigious event. Of course, pressure is nothing new to the experienced rider, and he faced down the press at a recent media conference he was only too willing to discuss his chances of victory at Cheltenham.

"I think Jezki [in the Champion Hurdle] is my best ride because, well, he's one of the shortest priced horses that I've got to ride,"said McCoy, when asked directly about his chances. "And purely because he's the reigning champion and, if you look back down through the last 20 years of the Champion Hurdle, a lot of the names that were involved in the finish will be involved the following year." The champion jockey also confirmed that all thoughts of retirement will be put out of his mind when he climbs each ride at Cheltenham, giving weight to the assertion that McCoy is determined and well-prepared to succeed this time out.
