The
World's Most Successful Gamblers
From
Connor Christopher
June 2016.
It's important to gamble responsibly; to know your
limits and to stick to them. Gambling is supposed
to be fun and there's no guarantee of success. However,
there are many people who have become masters in their
fields and have gone on to become some of the richest
people in the world.
The key to success in gambling is knowing what you
are betting on and becoming an expert in your chosen
field, but that is not easy. Whatever it is that you
choose to make your money on, whether it's poker,
horse racing, baccarat, blackjack or sports betting,
it's not easy to become a master. It can take years
and years to become an established poker player, learning
strategy for baccarat can be challenging and becoming
a master of horse racing requires endless studying
of both horse and jockey. There are people who have
mastered gambling, and not by luck - by a lot of hard
work mastering their trade.
Here are some of the world's most successful gamblers:
Scotty Nguyen
The Vietnamese poker player was a bus boy before
ditching that life to learn to become a card dealer.
Eventually, he realised he had the skills to try professional
poker in 1985.
It wasn't all plain sailing for Nguyen though. Throughout
his career, in which he won five world poker championships,
he had many losses and even had to go back to dealing
in the early years.
In over 20 years of gambling, the former bus boy
has taken home more than $11.25 million from live
tournament winnings alone.
William Benter
Regarded as one of the wealthiest gamblers in the
world, the American-born genius developed computer
software that mastered the Hong Kong horse racing
tracks.
Benter used computer science and with the help of
his team, they made their own prices and probabilities,
and used these to bet against the general public who
generally place bets on horses because they like the
name or because a friend gave them a tip.
It is estimated that Benter now makes around $10
million from Hong Kong horse racing every year.
Phil Ivey
Many rate Ivey as the world's greatest poker player.
Before he'd even turned 30, Ivey had earned millions
and already won five World Series of Poker Tournament
titles.
He has since won another three World Series titles
and firmly established himself as one of the greatest
players of all time.
According
to Celebrity Net Worth, Ivey is now worth a staggering
$100 million.
Zeljko Ranogajec
In 1994, expert gambler Ranogajec broke the world
record for the biggest Keno jackpot ever won, taking
home $7.5 million. Although Ranogajec actually bet
more than $7.5 million to win the jackpot, after minor
prize wins plus rebates he also received, it worked
out that he had made a hefty profit.
The big money for Ranogajec came from horse racing.
Although he remains very secretive about his gambling,
it is estimated that he turns over $1 billion a year
from his professional gambling operations all over
world.
